Sunset at the Bunkers del Carmel

About This Place

The Bunkers del Carmel are a set of old Civil War anti-aircraft platforms on one of Barcelona's highest hills. The 360-degree view over the city and the sea makes this arguably the best sunset spot in Barcelona — raw, unpolished, and completely breathtaking.

Things to Know

Tips for this place
  • Bring water and a light layer — the hilltop gets breezy after the sun drops.
  • Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset. The best spots on the upper platform fill up fast, especially on weekends.

How to Capture It

Camera settings
Bracket your exposures. The dynamic range between the bright sky and the shadowed city is extreme at sunset.
Capture tips
Silhouettes of people sitting on the concrete edges make for powerful foreground subjects against the sunset sky. Stay after the sun sets for the blue-hour cityscape. The lights of the Sagrada Família towers are visible from here.

This is the shot that made me fall in love with Barcelona. Get there early, bring something to drink, and stay until the city lights come on. It is the best free show in town.
